For every battery collected, BCAA receives $5 from the recyclers which will be donated to the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation. The batteries will be recycled into new batteries.
“Used batteries pose health and safety risks because of their lead and sulfuric acid content,” says BCAA’s Ken Cousin. They could leak and contaminate soil and groundwater, explode and cause a fire, or become a source of lead poisoning to people and animals.
More than 97 per cent of such batteries–generally used to power cars, trucks, campers, motorcycles, boats and small planes–are recyclable. However, every year it’s estimated more than half a million in Canada are not recycled.
