Chinamex Middle East Investment & Trade Promotion Center FZCO On April 1, 2000, China Middle East Investment and Trade Promotion Center¡¯s predecessor, China Electronics and Machinery Products Exhibition Center, established operations in Sharjah. While it is a cooperative project between the governments of China and the UAE, the completion of China Electronics and Machinery Products Exhibition Center led to the birth of China Middle East Investment and Trade Promotion Center, Chinamex. In 2002, then Vice-president of the State Council of China Wu Yi visited the Middle East and gave a prompt to China Electronics and Machinery Products Exhibition Center. Chinamex has been created under the Chinese Ministry of Commerce Overseas Management Center. Since 2000, Chinamex has already become an important aspect of promoting the implementation of ¡°Going Global¡± strategy for Chinese companies. It promotes Chinese products in trying to create an ¡°international brand¡± by promoting the diversification of Chinese export markets as an important overseas window. Additionally, Chinamex has already created China¡¯s largest overseas trade platform. It provides high-level services for Chinese and foreign companies in the specialized areas of international exhibitions, commodities trade, Chinese company and city internationalization, investment, and reciprocal trade. Thousands of Chinese companies have used Chinamex as their road to international markets. At the same time, Chinamex has expanded direct investment in iron ore, oil and petrochemicals, and other international business domains. Chinamex has created the biggest economic and trade platform in Middle East---- Dragon Mart Dubai under the support of Chinese and UAE¡¯s government. After obtaining the successful experience of Dragon Mart Dubai, Chinamex decided to create the biggest economic and trade platform in Latin America under the support of both government of China and Mexico, it enjoyed widely reorganization and close attention from business circles of Mexico and its neighboring countries. Chinamex will provide the Commercial Zone of ¡°Dragon Mart Cancun¡± to the Trade Development Bureau of Chinese Ministry of Commerce as the exhibition hall of ¡°Chinese Products (Cancun) Long-term Exhibition¡±. It is intended to utilize the advantageous geographical location of Mexico and especially Cancun, well developed tourism resources and services of Cancun as an internationally well-known tourist city, the impact of Cancun to the Mexican area, North America and South America, helping the Chinese enterprises to enter and expand American market conveniently. Due to the wealthy experiences of Chinamex in building Dragon Mart Dubai and other overseas platforms, the Trade Development Bureau of Chinese Ministry of Commerce decided to entrust Chinamex as one of the organizers of the exhibition, offering coordination and services. Website will take on group-buying giants via China

LightInTheBox.com OrderWithMe.com AliExpress DinoDirect.com chinadaily.com.cnWebsite will take on group-buying giants via ChinaUpdated: 2012-02-04 07:48 By Su Zhou (China Daily) Danielle and Jonathan Jenkins HANGZHOU - Jonathan and Danielle Jenkins, a young couple from Texas in the United States, want to challenge Jack Ma's e-commerce empire. Even though they speak little Mandarin, the Jenkins' started OrderWithMe.com in July in Hangzhou, the cradle of Ma's Alibaba Group. The group-buying website allows small and medium-sized Western companies to buy high-quality products in bulk from Chinese factories. In turn, this allows the retailers to save money and earn greater profits. OrderWithMe competes with AliExpress, a similar platform operated by Alibaba, but the Jenkins' said they can do better. "Most small businesses cannot order directly from Chinese factories because they cannot meet the factory minimum quantity. Small businesses are also wary of buying a product from China without seeing it first," said Jonathan Jenkins. By grouping orders from multiple small businesses together, OrderWithMe gives retailers the opportunity to meet the minimum order requirements. In six months, OrderWithMe has already handled $100,000 in transactions. Businesses log on to the website, browse products and pre-pay for the items they want. If the order is worth more than $250, the items are delivered free of charge. "I once met staff members from Alibaba at a trade show in Las Vegas. They were very interested in our idea," said Jenkins. Alibaba uses a third-party payment system called Alipay. Buyers pay for the items upon ordering, but Alipay places the money on hold until the buyer confirms the order has been received. OrderWithMe, on the other hand, pays factories directly, eliminating the payment delay. "Alibaba is a great company, but small businesses need more than just an e-mail contact with a factory." Jenkins is fully aware of the growing competition and has decided to move faster to gain an advantage in the group-buying platform. After securing $3 million in angel funds from the Sino-Japanese Infinity Venture Partners and the US firm SOSventures Investments, the company's website is undergoing a face-lift, which will be unveiled on Feb 20. Because of its six-month growth spurt, the company has expanded from a 100-square-meter (sq m) office to a 2,000-sq-m warehouse. And in three month's time, the two hope to look at business opportunities in Japan. Beyond simply growing in size, the company also plans to offer more products and more categories. "We only started from a niche of fashion and home decor. But our customers need more," said Jackson. OrderWithMe is currently researching products ranging from home-and-garden supplies to electronics. "Our US buyers work with the pre-qualified factories to select their best products. Our customers will give us feedback on which items they like. Our buyers will then select the top products to be available for deals (posted on our website)," said Danielle Jenkins. "After the deal runs, we group the small-business orders together and place one large order with the factory." OrderWithMe plans to branch out beyond Chinese brands and offer its own products this year, starting with fashion accessories and home decor. In-house employees will design the products, and production will be outsourced to Chinese manufacturers. "A lot of Chinese factories don't know how to market their products in a way that captures the attention of Westerners. And their Chinese brand names may not make any sense in English or don't sound appealing, such as Yang Hangzhou Leather Company Ltd," Jonathan Jenkins said. He added that new products will debut online each week once the new website is up and running. Unlike Chinese foreign-trade websites, OrderWithMe is the combination of "foreign trade" and "group buying". It integrates the demands of small businesses all over the world and offers the same prices offered to large retailers. Its business model is simple: by allowing the retail stores to buy directly from the factories, they can save up to 70 percent of the price offered by a US wholesaler. "We are cutting out so many middlemen and providing the best prices to the small businesses," said Gao Yang, co-founder of OrderWithMe. Jonathan Jenkins said the company helps small Western businesses connect with the Chinese e-commerce world. "Everyone knows that it is cheaper to buy directly from China, but most people are overwhelmed by the number of factory options," he said. The Jenkins said their team simplifies the process of buying overseas goods. OrderWithMe finds the products customers are looking for, takes pictures and video, and interacts with customers via Twitter, Facebook, e-mail and the phone. "We take care of our customers and treat them like family. And with our money-back guarantee and the ability for them to talk to our buyers, they learn to trust us," Jonathan Jenkins said. He conceived the idea of purchasing goods in China and bringing them to the US while touring the Middle Kingdom. He graduated from Abilene Christian University in Texas in 2005 with a degree in political science and took a teaching job in Shanghai soon after. During his travels, he noticed how inexpensive items were in Yiwu in Zhejiang province, a town known for its wholesale small merchandise market. "In the US, a handbag may cost you $50, but in Yiwu, it will only cost you $4," Jonathan Jenkins said. "I thought it could be a successful business if I bought goods from China and sold them in the US." So he opened two shops in Texas under the name of 'Zida", a Chinese word which means to be arrogant or conceited. "We picked the name because the American women thought it was funny, because they like to buy fashion accessories to feel better and look cooler," Jonathan Jenkins said. He purchased a variety of items from China. However, because he was required to order at least 100 of each item from factories in Yiwu, he was overloaded with inventory and his business ultimately failed. "I was thinking that if I could create a group-buying platform that would allow small businesses to buy together, then we would remove the inventory risk," Jonathan Jenkins said. "Small businesses are too busy to sort through thousands of handbags, so our buyers can help them quickly find the best products." Although they learned from their mistakes, the couple did have encounter some problems in the beginning. It took at least four months working with the local government to get the company fully operational. "There are limitations on foreign-funded companies, but I think things are getting better now," Gao said. But the most trying time might be the next three months, as the company looks to expand as well as debut a redesigned website. Jonathan Jenkins wants the company to grow quickly to squash competitors, but at the same time, doesn't want to lower its service standards. Many websites in China, such as LightInTheBox.com and DinoDirect.com, are jumping into the e-commerce market for foreign trade, but it's not as easy as it looks. "Foreign-trade websites will face the problems of brand recognition, cultural differences as well as the high cost of tax and delivery," said Chen Shousong, an e-commerce analyst at the market-research firm Analysys International. "It is not easy for small- and medium-sized businesses to succeed in this sector. China Daily (China Daily 02/04/2012 page10) Copyright By chinadaily.com.cn. All rights reserved OrderWithMe.com in July in Hangzhou, the cradle of Ma's Alibaba Group (American Run)China's e-commerce giant Some online markets and websites were also included on the list. China's e-commerce giant Taobao was reported to have engaged in piracy and counterfeiting, and two Chinese music websites, Sogou MP3 and Gougou, were cited for providing services deeply linked to music copyright violations. "I will admit that some of the websites provide rights-infringing products or services," said Fang Xingdong, board chairman of the Beijing-based IT think tank Chinalabs.com. "But it is unfair to label these websites 'notorious markets' since other online stores registered on the websites will be affected by the list," Fang said. China has made great efforts to crack down on piracy and counterfeiting in recent years. Statistics from Taobao show that the company had addressed a total of 62 million items of information regarding trade in rights-infringing goods during the first 11 months of this year, and 570,000 of its members have been punished. Some U.S. brands have already shown their confidence in China's markets. Nike, Benefit, and Coach have all opened online stores on Tmall.com, the business-to-consumer (B2C) website owned by Taobao. Unlike many other Chinese small enterprises, YIJIA discarded sales agents and established its own distribution outlets in its overseas markets such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Nigeria. http://news.xinhuanet.com According to the MIC, about 14 percent of global mobile phone users are also smartphone users in 2011. Therefore, the industry aims at emerging market such as Asia-Pacific, Middle East and African countries, and plans to develop mid- and low-end smartphones to be sold at less than 300 U.S. dollars in 2012. Such low-end smartphones will account for 17 percent of mobile phone sales in 2012 and nearly 50 percent in 2016, the MIC said. As a global IT hub, Taiwan produces half of the world's chips for computers, mobiles phones and other electronics, according to the Taiwan Semiconductor Association (TSIA). The MIC estimated the rapid growth of low-end smartphones will boost the island's semiconductor sector and relevant Taiwanese companies will further expand investment on the Chinese mainland. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/index.html Yang Hangzhou Leather Company Ltd Tekxon Tekxon Z68 2.0" LCD 5.0MP CMOS 12MP Max 8x Digital Zoom Camera Tekxon DV7000 HD 720p VIVIKAI DV-558 RICH HD-A75 Full HD 1080p 10. This allows them to be a one stop shop (almost their own independent channel) for all of their products. Asus designs them, builds them and ships them all within the same family of companies. This is in contrast to Foxconn which concentrates on manufacturing more than component design and marketing (although they do still have their own line of products).

Gigabyte and MSI also have manufacturing and assembly plants, but for the most part they have either operated as an ODM (original design manufacturer) or have made these products in limited numbers due to cost. MSI for example has been an ODM for servers and laptops for some time. It has only been relatively recently that they have begun to sell their own branded products (and they still are not a major presence in the US). Gigabyte is also an ODM but on a smaller scale than either MSI or Asus (although they have been making server boards for Intel for some time). What really gives Asus that upper hand here is their manufacturing capabilities, Pegatron is a large manufacturer big enough that even Apple uses them. They have facilities to really push out their products on a larger scale than MSI or Gigabyte can at this time. Asus also has better consumer market confidence which all started with the EEE PC. They have a couple of years head start on the competition. After speaking with both MSI and Gigabyte about their market penetration in North America and in particular the US they both acknowledge that it is hard to compete with the likes of Dell, HP, Acer and others. This is despite some bad press that all three companies have gotten in the past and the good reputation these companies have for components.

Chongqing is a major city in Sichuan The PC industry and Cars and Motorcyle Companies

Chongqing is a major city in Sichuan province, southwestern part of China Chongqing's industries

Chongqing's industries have now diversified but unlike eastern China, its export sector is small due to its inland location. Instead, factories producing local-oriented consumer goods such as processed food, autos, chemicals, textiles, machinery and electronics are common.

Chongqing is China's third largest centre for motor vehicle production and the largest for motorcycles. In 2007, it had an annual output capacity of 1 million automobiles and 8.6 million motorcycles.

Leading makers of cars and motor bikes includes China's fourth biggest automaker; Changan Automotive Corp and Lifan Hongda Enterprise.

As the leading maker of diesel engines and heavy-duty trucks in China, Weichai Holdings Group Co.

The PC industry

The PC industry is setting up vast new factories, development and logistics centres in the cities of Chongqing and Chengdu in western China. Hewlett-Packard, Acer and Asustek, the world’s number one, three and six PC brands by shipments, chose Chongqing. Dell and Lenovo, ranking second and fourth, picked Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province less than 300km away.

That spurred Quanta, HP’s largest manufacturing partner, which also supplies all other leading notebook brands, to set up shop in Chongqing as well. Foxconn, which serves HP, Dell, Apple, Asustek and Sony, set up facilities in both cities while Compal and Wistron, two other large notebook contract manufacturers, are building factories in both places.

Inventec, a smaller manufacturer, is ramping up operations in Chongqing.

In the first five months this year, Chongqing sold 2.43 million laptop computers abroad. The exports were valued at 840 million U.S. dollars, accounting for 20 percent of the city's total export value.

Taiwan's Compal Electronics to build production base in Chongqing

Compal Electronics Inc., a major world contract maker of laptops, has signed an agreement to build a production base in southwest Chongqing Municipality, local authorities said Tuesday.

The Taiwan-based company is the last of the world's six largest computer contract manufacturers to have plants in Chongqing as the city strives to become the world's largest OEM (original equipment manufacturer) base for laptops, the city government said in a statement.

Zhang Yongqing, CEO of Compal Electronics, said its Chongqing base would combine research and design and the production and sales of desktops, laptops, TV sets and other digital products, plus spare parts and accessories.

The plant aims to produce 10 million laptops and other consumer electronics annually by 2015, Zhang added.

Chongqing has lured major laptop brands, including HP, Acer and Asus and contract manufacturers like Foxcom, according to Huang Qifan, mayor of Chongqing. Huang noted that the city plans to produce 100 million laptops and 100 million related electronic terminals annually by 2015.

Chongqing's location can help reduce transportation costs for companies and make the city a major inland electronics production base, Huang said. The revenue of the electronic information industry amounted to 136 billion yuan (21 billion U.S. dollars) in 2010, up 46.3 percent year-on-year. The number is expected to hit 200 billion yuan in 2011.

Acer begins Chongqing laptop production 1 June 2011 Acer’s first made-in-Chongqing laptop was produced on 26 May, according to a municipal government website. The world’s second largest PC maker by shipments aims to produce 30-40 per cent of its laptops and notebooks at new facilities in Chongqing by the end of 2011, according to company president Jim Wong.

Taiwan-based Acer said key suppliers have established operations in Chongqing and will begin component shipping by the second half of this year. Acer has followed closely behind HP in establishing a major production facility in the city.

Between 1 January and 28 May 2011, HP exported 2,107,000 computer sets from Chongqing, valued at US$718m. An average air cargo consignment generates more than 30 documents according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Reducing the burden of paperwork is the ambition of ‘e-freight,’ an industry-wide project initiated by IATA in 2004 to remove paper from the supply chain. The initiative involves airlines, shippers, freight forwarders, carriers, ground handling agents and customs authorities. The objective is to replace original paper documents with electronic versions. production by 2012.

Supply Chain Asia Knowledge Supply Chain Asia magazine

Here at Supply Chain Asia Knowledge we’ve been digging up the potential of the world’s largest municipality for some time. And latest figures show we were right to highlight Chongqing as a really exciting prospect. In the first quarter, the giant southwest Chinese city’s airport shifted $571m worth of cargo, up a whopping 235.9 percent year-on-year.

Chongqing exported 599,600 laptops in the first quarter. To help products clear faster, the city has opened a green channel for IT products giving a clearance time of no more than ten minutes. And there aren’t any signs of these numbers slowing.

Taiwan’s computer giant Asus has just announced a $150m factory to be established in the city, which briefly served as the Chinese capital during the Second World War. “Now we already have the three of the world’s top computer manufacturers planted in Chongqing: HP, Acer and Asus.

This year Chongqing will produce approximately 30 million laptops and we estimate the laptop production will reach approximately 100 million by 2012, which is almost one third of the world’s laptop production,” an official from the Chongqing Economic and Information Commission told Supply Chain Asia magazine.

Air cargo carriers are excited by the potential of the market. Yangtze River Express launched a new freighter service from Taipei to Chongqing on April 12. The flights will be operated twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays using B737F. “The route will greatly strengthen the IT bond between Taipei and Chongqing, the biggest city in southwest China. At the same time, the new route will have linkage effects with Yangtze River Express’ existing Guangzhou-Chongqing and Shanghai- Chongqing-Moscow-Luxembourg routes to build a seamless connection between Taiwan, southwest China and Europe,” said a spokesperson from Yangtze River Express.

TNT Airways and EVA Airways have also launched cargo routes out of Chongqing.“There will be huge needs for air cargo in the IT industry here, now we are in negotiations with China Cargo Airlines, Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa Cargo and AirBridge Cargo. We are trying to open daily freighter services to Europe, America and Southeast Asia by the end of this June to support the industry,” said the official.

A special cargo train service from Chongqing to Xinjiang and onto Germany and Holland also started recently. From Chongqing to Duisburg, the service will take 16 days to cross 11,179 kilometers.

Chongqing is becoming a fixture on the international IT and cargo map.

In 2011, laptop computer vendors encountered two major difficulties. First, Eurozone debt crisis deteriorated, while Europe is one of major laptop computer markets; second, the Thailand flood in October hit the HDD disk industry severely and impacted laptop computer shipment in best-season Q4 since nearly half of the hard disks worldwide were produced there. As a result, the laptop shipment registered 195 million units in 2011, just up 1.6% from 2010.

94% of global laptop computers are assembled by Taiwanese vendors, mostly ODMs instead of OEMs. Majority of vendors just define the product positioning, rather than design. ODMs assume not only design and production but component procurement. So, laptop ODM is not the field for which ordinary EMS manufacturers are competent, and only a few ones can do that.

In 2011, laptops witnessed two biggest changes. Above all, the traditional EMS corporations-- Flextronics quitted the laptop contract manufacture. Flextronics tapped into the field in 2009, but within two years, it only received HP’s orders, and HP’s order price was much lower than that of other vendors. Therefore, most of ODMs are reluctant to deal with HP’s orders. Though Flextronics received orders, it suffered huge losses.

Hon Hai, quite similar to Flextronics, persevered in developing the laptop contract manufacture, but it strictly controlled the contract scale. Many believe Hon Hai will retreat from the laptop contract manufacture sooner or later. The withdrawal of EMS players brought a reprieve to laptop ODMs who competed fiercely for meager profit.

Second, the laptop production transferred to western China. Although all laptop ODMs are from Taiwan, their production bases are located in Mainland China. According to the data of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), China's laptop output was 244 million in 2011, of which 230 million ones were exported. Herein, laptops cover Tablet PCs and Kindle Fire e-book readers.

In 2010, laptop manufacturers accessed to Chongqing successively. Their production bases put into production in 2011 when 25,478,200 computers were produced in Chongqing (an 11.9-fold rise), including 24,073,900 laptops (up 25.4-fold). However, Chengdu became the iPad production base, with the output of close to 20 million units in 2011.

Traditional laptop production bases are located in Shanghai and Kunshan. In 2011, 89.54 million laptops were produced in Shanghai and 89.07 million ones in Jiangsu Kunshan. The laptop production transferred to western China because of the rising labor costs in the Yangtze River Delta. For production staff and management personnel, the wages rose year by year, which made laptop ODMs with the gross margin of 3-4% be overwhelmed.

In western provinces of China, the labor costs are lower, but the logistics costs are higher. Moreover, the western labor costs are growing rapidly. Therefore, Chongqing is the second base at most; the Yangtze River Delta is still the first base. The future production base of Taiwanese laptop ODMs may be Viet Nam. The laptop supporting industrial chain in the Yangtze River Delta is the most perfect, and the logistics costs are the lowest, so the region will still be the main production base in the upcoming 2-3 years.

In 2011, Tablet PCs made great strides. Apple's iPad shipment reached 47.6 million, a substantial rise of 2.2 times. In fact, the biggest difference between Tablet PC and laptop lies in processors and screens. It is hard to make product differentiation in processors, while it is easier to differentiate screens, especially touch screens.

OGS (One Glass Solution) is most discussed and recognized as the development direction of touch screens. OGS has three kinds. To keep the independent industry chain, touch screen manufacturers integrate upstream tempered glass cover lens to propose TOL (Touch On Lens) solutions. Panel makers prefer in-house touch process, so they propose On-cell solutions and In-cell solutions. Under the guide of Apple, On-Cell and In-Cell solutions have grown mature.

The monopoly of Samsung in AMOLED forces Apple to seek cooperation with the panel makers such as Sharp and TMD, and Apple projects huge capital in R&D of screen and touch technology. It is very possible that Apple will accept On-Cell and In-Cell solutions of panel makers. Most people believe that In-Cell solutions will be adopted. At present, only TPK and Wintek supply touch screens for iPad, neither of which are panel manufacturers; if In-Cell solutions are employed, both of them will lose the business opportunities valued at USD8 billion, but it is out of the question. It is still unknown that whether TOL or In-Cell will win.

iPad 3 will be launched in March 2012. To reduce its over-reliance on Hon Hai, Apple has cooperated with Pegatron and it also considers the cooperation with Quanta Computer that is the largest laptop ODM.

Our company is an enterprise specializing in manufacturing various stainless steel metal products. We have advanced technology, equipment, and management. We have many products, such as stainless steel vacuum cups, vacuum flasks, travel bottles, baby bottles, sports bottles, coffee pots, and wide mouth pots. With unique and elegant designs, high quality, and reasonable prices, our products are well appraised by our customers. Chinese cookware maker Zhejiang Supor Co Ltd, controlled by French home appliance company Groupe SEB, said that its products are safe, refuting media reports that its pans could cause health problems. On Thursday, state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) said in a report that some of Supor's cookware products contained an excessive amount of manganese — a chemical element which, if taken in large amounts, can cause neurological damage to humans. It added that although most countries, including China, had not set standards related to the amount of manganese in pots and pans, Supor has had its products tested and certified as safe by the standards of Italy, which it said was the only developed country that has published manganese-related standards. "Our company will continue to strengthen quality management, and will continue to provide high quality," Supor said. Supor, China's biggest cookware maker, makes products ranging from frying pans to rice cookers, and is majority-owned by SEB, which owns brands such as Tefal and Moulinex. Trading in Supor shares, which was suspended yesterday in response to the media report, will resume next week, the company said. Its shares closed at 15.68 yuan (RM7.72) on Thursday before the suspension, down 6.1 per cent so far this year. China's food industry has been beset by a series of scandals over quality, including carcinogenic and other disease-causing ingredients found in milk and other foods, which have eroded consumers’ confidence. SEB will raise its stake to 71.3 per cent from 51.3 per cent in a move that will allow the founding Su family to take cash out of the business and look for new opportunities. The French group acquired its initial stake in 2007 with the idea of positioning itself inside a market with a growing upper and middle-class. Earlier this week SEB told mergermarket of its intentions to expand further into emerging markets including Asia and South America for precisely this reason. SEB International said in a statement: The purpose of this complementary acquisition is to strengthen the strategic investment completed by Groupe SEB in Supor in 2007 and secure the smooth development of the company through a solid and stable shareholders’ base. An SEB spokesperson said that for the Su family the sale presented an opportunity to undertake new projects and perhaps invest in new businesses, but the Supor management would stay in place. Teh family would retain a 12.5 per cent holding. SEB International will retain Supor’s stock market free float at 16 per cent. The SEB spokesperson said there were no plans to make any further changes in the capital structure and has no intention of delisting. According to the Supor website (English), the Hangzhou-based company has 7,000 employees (against SEB’s 23,000). Founded in 1994, its first success was with a pressure cooker. It claims top position in China’s cookware industry. The deal has been approved by the Supor board and is pending shareholder approval. The deal also needs approval from the China Ministry of Commerce and the China Securities Regulatory Commission. THE FREIGHT FORWARDER Import/export merchant

THE FREIGHT FORWARDER

A freight forwarder is a person who takes care of the important steps of shipping the merchandise. This person quotes shipping rates, provides routing information, and books cargo space. Freight forwarders prepare documentation, contract shipping insurance, route cargo with the lowest customs charges, and arrange storage. They are valuable to you as an import/export agent, and they are important in handling the steps from factory to final destination. They can be found by looking in the yellow pages or by personal referrals. Find someone who can do a good job for you. You'll need someone who you can work with, since this may become a long-term business relationship You'll need the help of a freight forwarder when you make up the total price quotation to the distributor. Not only do you include the manufacturer's price and your commission - usually added together, but you need to include dock and cartage fees, the forwarder's fees, ocean freight costs, marine insurance, duty charges, and any consular invoice fees, packing charges, or other hidden costs. Be especially careful when you prepare this quotation. It certainly isn't professional to come back to the distributor with a higher quote including fees you forgot. You might go over the price quotation with your freight forwarder to be sure nothing is overlooked. Usually the quotation is itemized into three main categories of cost of goods, which includes your commission; freight charges from destination to destination; and insurance fees. Give a date the quotation is valid to, which should be the same as the date given on your quotes. You may also include information about the products, including any new sales literature. A formal letter that accompanies the price quotation should push for the sale. You can inform the distributor of the shipping date as soon as the order is received and confirmed by a letter of credit. Send the letter and price quotation by registered mail to be certain of its delivery.

Definitions
1.^ Encarta World English Dictionary - forwarder: somebody who ships goods: a person or company whose business is the collection, shipment, and delivery of goods.
2.^ Random House Unabridged Dictionary - freight forwarder: A person or firm that arranges to pick up or deliver goods on instructions of a shipper or a consignee from or to a point by various necessary conveyances and common carriers.

Cargo or Freight Agent

The function of a Cargo or Freight Agent
is to arrange and track incoming or
outgoing shipments. The Cargo or
Freight Agent usually is involved in the
coordination of shipments via air, rail,
road and sea.

Primary Objectives:

 ■
The Cargo and Freight Agent normally
makes sure that all incoming and
outgoing shipments are properly noted
and put into a computer data base for
future tracking and distribution.

The Cargo and Freight Agent work to
speed up shipments by chalking out
routes to be taken.

The Cargo and Freight Agent usually
makes sure that all paper work is
prepared in order for the shipment to be
moved across country.
The Cargo and Freight Agent often takes
orders from the customer in order to
arrange for freight pickup and its
delivery to the desired destination. The
Cargo and Freight Agent keeps careful
records of cargo, and documents any
missing or damaged items. It is vital that
the Cargo and Freight Agent document
these items so the customer who bought
them can get a replacement or credit for
any missing or damaged goods. The
report that the Cargo and Freight Agent
prepares will determines any claim that
the receiving customer may have against
the person who sent the merchandise in
order to get reimbursed. The method
that the merchandise was shipped and
how it was handled can determine if the
shipper is the one who is responsible for
any damaged or missing items.
Sometimes the loss or damage to
merchandise may not have happened at
the manufacturer or the way that it was
shipped instead could it be the manner
that the shipper used while the goods
were in transit.

The Cargo and Freight Agent usually
organize cargo according to their
destination and according to which
shipments will be picked up first. The
Cargo and Freight Agent may need to
rotate some shipments because of the
lack of ability for the customer to have
the shipment picked up. The shipments
are usually picked up in a timely manner
especially those shipments that are
perishable. The Cargo and Freight Agent
often determine freight charges based on
the type of merchandise and the
distance that it needs to be taken by the
freight hauler. Trucking companies often
are the ones who pick up the
merchandise and deliver it to the proper
destination. In some events the Trucking
Companies may pick up the cargo take it
to an airlines that will fly it to another
destination and then the Trucking
Company pick it up at the new
destination taking it to the final
destination. That is why the Cargo and
Freight Agent need to determine how
much the charge for shipment will come
to so the owner will know their total
cost.

Most Cargo and Freight Agents only need
a high school diploma in order to get the
job. The Cargo and Freight Agents are
usually taught how to do their job while
working. Since they deal with many
different types of cargo and methods of
transportation and distances it is
essential that they learn the job
informally while working. It is rather
difficult to learn how to handle this type
of job with a formal education. Entry
level Cargo and Freight Agents start out
by checking the items to be shipped.
Then they usually progress to do more
levels of the work as they are trained.
Most Cargo and Freight Agents are
expected to be able to use automated
equipment and especially computers.
Most places who hire Cargo and Freight
Agents prefer to hire someone who
already knows how to use the computer
and can do spread sheet programs. The
Cargo and Freight Agent must have good
knowledge of filing, bookkeeping and
other clerical skills. Most of these basic
skills are taught in high school so a
person can be trained by taking the right
courses in high school or they can go to
a community college to learn the basic
clerical skills and computer skills needed
in order to do the job. Most places who
hire someone to work as their Cargo and
Freight Agent are willing to train them on
the job and attend special classes at the
area community college in order to be
able to do the job properly.

The Difference Between NVOCC & Freight
Forwarder By Quanza Washington, eHow
Contributor
A non-vessel operating common carrier
and a freight forwarder offer similar
international shipping services, but play
different roles during the movement of
the cargo. As instructed by the
shipper/customer, NVOCCs and freight
forwarders may be responsible for
booking space on the carrier,
documenting exports, establishing cargo
insurance, advising the shipper on
foreign import regulations, providing
guidance on proper packaging, marking
and labeling of commodities, and
arranging the packing and containerizing
of goods.
Purpose

Freight forwarders are to commodities as
travel agents are to people, and act as a
third-party to arrange the movement of
goods from their domestic origin to a
foreign destination. Freight forwarders,
while not carriers themselves, coordinate
the movement of cargo by utilizing the
services of other parties, including ocean
freighters, air-cargo lines, rail freighters
and trucking companies.
Non-vessel operating common carriers
can be described as a carrier to the
shipper and a shipper to the carrier.
NVOCCs don't own and operate their own
vessels, but they do play the role as the
carrier, offering the services of other
parties, such as rail freighters, air-cargo
lines, trucking companies, consolidation
warehouses and ocean freighters.

Customers

Big shippers moving large quantities of
goods can benefit from the all-inclusive
services of a freight forwarder and low
contract rates with its partners, which it
passes on to the customer. A reputable
freight forwarder will have space
reserved on carrier transports at any
given time, allowing customers access to
booking arrangements that may be
closed to the public.
Big shippers moving goods in smaller
amounts can take advantage of lower
costs by utilizing an NVOCC, which
books space on carriers at lower rates
and in large quantities for shipments
called "less-than-container loads." These
LCLs allow customers to consolidate
their goods with other shippers' goods
and share the cost of shipping one
container for more favorable individual
rates.

Documentation

Freight forwarders gather all required
documentation for entry to foreign
countries from their customers and
carriers, amended to comply with foreign
regulations, and forwarded to the final
destination party for clearance. NVOCCs,
however, act as the carrier and issue
their own bills of lading or air waybills.
Such carriers amend the commercial
invoice and packing list from the
customer to comply with foreign entry
regulations before forwarding the
documentation to their foreign agent,
who ensures clearance, breakdown of the
container and arrangement for delivery
to the consignee.

Damages/Liability

Freight forwarders typically carry limited
amounts of liability insurance per
shipment, and accept liability only for
damages caused by their negligence,
while damage caused by the carrier
appointed by the freight forwarder falls
on the carrier itself. In some cases,
shippers declare the value of each
shipment and purchase additional
insurance to cover it. In general, NVOCCs
accept responsibility as carrier of the
cargo for damages such as loss, physical
damage or delay of the goods.

Freight Forwarder Job Description
By Steven W. Easley, eHow Contributor

International trade runs on several
timetables; there are ships entering and
leaving ports and planes taking off and

job of freight brokers and forwarders.
Companies worldwide depend on the
services of freight forwarding firms to
deliver their products on time.
Educational Requirements

Although there are no set educational
requirements for a position as a freight
forwarder, computer skills and a good
understanding of the transportation
industry are helpful. Many companies
provide new employees with on-the-job
training. There are also a few training
courses offered by trucking companies
and vocational schools. These programs
help to instruct students in the proper
paperwork and procedures for clearing
freight with customs and dealing with
companies that offer transportation
services. Individuals and companies
performing the duties of a freight-
forwarding firm must apply to the
Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration and obtain the proper
legal operating authority before
beginning operation.

Job Duties

Freight forwarders manage, schedule,
supervise and coordinate the shipment
of goods domestically and across
international boundaries. In some cases,
freight forwarders may be required to
cross load or arrange warehousing
services during transport. Freight
forwarders are responsible for
communicating with transportation
companies to monitor the status of
shipments so they can update their
clients on a daily basis.

Working Environment

Typically, freight forwarders work in a
combination of warehouse, loading dock
and office environments depending on
how much they are required to
physically deal with individual
shipments.

Employment Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, employment opportunities for
cargo and freight workers should
increase by approximately 24 percent
during the decade of 2008 to 2018. The

nature of the items, terrain over which

budget. The also need to arrange for
delivery and once they reached their

insurance companies and customs duties
both locally and overseas, as applicable.

freight forwarder to use or design
software, IT solutions, Internet
technology and even satellites for real
time tracking of goods in transit. In
some instances, delicate goods are
needed to be transported such as
medical supplies, food, livestock and
other fragile items. For this purpose,
cargo freight forwarders need to make
special arrangements for their shipment
and if needed, use courier or special
hand-carry services.

Cargo freight forwarders have to know
how to work and interact closely with
customers and colleagues as well as third

Freight Forwarders
Freight Forwarders act as intermediaries
of exporters and importers in arranging
for the safe, cost-effective and efficient
means of transporting goods and
merchandise for clients such as ships,

researching and making plans to
determine the best possible route and
type of transportation for shipping
goods and merchandise. They must take
into account the type of merchandise

overseas. It is the job of freight
forwarders to obtain, check and prepare
pertinent documents to comply with
their customs and insurance regulations.
They act as brokers and consultants
when negotiating with customs overseas,

through the complexities of customs
requirements. Because of this, they

Weiss Types of Import/Export Businesses First off, let's take a look at the players. While you've got your importers and your exporters, there are many variations on the main theme:•Export management company (EMC): An EMC handles export operations for a domestic company that wants to sell its product overseas but doesn't know how (and perhaps doesn't want to know how). The EMC does it all--hiring dealers, distributors and representatives; handling advertising, marketing and promotions; overseeing marking and packaging; arranging shipping; and sometimes arranging financing. In some cases, the EMC even takes title to the goods, in essence becoming its own distributor. EMCs usually specialize by product, foreign market or both, and--unless they've taken title--are paid by commission, salary or retainer plus commission.•Export trading company (ETC): While an EMC has merchandise to sell and is using its energies to seek out buyers, an ETC attacks the other side of the trading coin. It identifies what foreign buyers want to spend their money on and then hunts down domestic sources willing to export. An ETC sometimes takes title to the goods and sometimes works on a commission basis.•Import/export merchant: This international entrepreneur is a sort of free agent. He has no specific client base, and he doesn't specialize in any one industry or line of products. Instead, he purchases goods directly from a domestic or foreign manufacturer and then packs, ships and resells the goods on his own. This means, of course, that unlike the EMC, he assumes all the risks (as well as all the profits). 4. Another option is to contact the Chamber of Commerce to find a supplier. A Chamber of Commerce is an association of companies that protects and promotes business interests of its members. For a complete list of Chambers of Commerce from various countries check out this page: http://www.worldchambers.com/CCII/index1.htm. 5. Of course, the internet. I am not going to forget why you are here. There are a lot of B2B eMarketplace hosted in different countries focusing in lead exchange. You can post an ad on the web-sites to tell them that you are looking for certain products. Most of these web-site provide free basic membership, and you will be free to browse until you are ready for the transactions. Resource: THE FREIGHT FORWARDER A freight forwarder is a person who takes care of the important steps of shipping the merchandise.
