The Kiwi burger is a type of burger totally unique to New Zealand, it consists of your normal beef burger ingredients but with the addition of beetroot, pineapple and eggs. I am not sure whether McDonalds had invented this recipe or it was based on an authentic Kiwi Recipe as this was a popular McDonald’s limited time menu option during 1991, 2007 and 2009. But having said that McDonalds was not just the one offering this burger even gourmet burger joints all around New Zealand serve this. When I first came here in NZ this was the first type of burger that I tried and it was not from McDonalds, I was so intrigued by the combination of flavours in the burger so I grabbed one, surprisingly it tasted really good and the different ingredients worked well with each other. There are different variations as well that I guess originated from the original recipe where they sometimes add avocadoes or even fruit based chutneys.

Ingredients
4 burger buns
600g premium beef mince
4 eggs
4 slices smoked cheddar cheese
1 large white onion, sliced
8-12 slices beetroot (canned)
4 pineapple rings
aioli
tomato relish
salad greens (lettuce, rocket, etc)
salt
pepper

Method
1. Season beef mince with salt and pepper. Divide into 4 balls and shape into patties. Pan grill or barbecue each patty and cook to your liking, I recommend until medium rare as it will still cook through once you rest the burger patty.

2. Now add a spoonful of aioli in one slice of ciabatta and relish on the other slice, then start placing the greens then the patty, then egg, pineapple, beetroot and onions.

3. Serve with Kumara / Sweet potato chips and your choice of salad.
