The Solar-powered Cyber Café for Africa uses four laptops for the cafe computers. We selected Dell D620 laptop computers and installed Ubuntu Linux on each, while retaining Windows as a fallback. The version of Ununtu pictured in this video is 11.04 Natty Narwhal, although the computers in the actual internet cafe are running 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot.
Cybercafé testing took place in Austin, Texas, and the prototype internet café is being deployed in N'Djamena, Chad, in the heart of Africa. This video was produced by Chad Now. Visit chadnow.org to learn more about The Solar-powered Cyber Café for Africa.
The solar-powered internet café
The solar-powered internet café for Africa is comprised of a Uni-solar PVL-124 flexible solar panel, a Morningstar MPPT 15 charge controller, a Pure Sine PowerBright 24V inverter, 12 AWG outdoor wiring, and a 24V battery bank (two 12V batteries).
This photovoltaic solar system is designed to be transportable to developing countries. Chad Now performed preliminary testing in Austin, Texas, and the prototype cafe is being deployed in N'Djamena, Chad in Africa. For more information on the project, equipment in the system, or instructions and tips on making your own solar cyber café, visit Chad Now at chadnow.org
Dell D620 Laptop Duo Core with Windows XP
This documentary is about the work of Energy For Opportunity (EFO) (www.energyforopportunity.org) in Sierra Leone, where it implements small-scale solar projects in rural communities. The specific project in the documentary, was funded by AusAID through the Australian High Commission in Ghana, and involved the installation of solar electricity at four sites: a school, a health clinic, a community centre and a hospital in the villages of Kamakwie and Kamalo. Students from the local Government Technical Institute (GTI) and National Power Authority (NPA) were involved in this project as a part of the courses they take at their respect institutes, which EFO helps to facilitate. This documentary is a Padi Mix Production.

Moussoro, Chad
Moussoro, Chad - The absence of computers in Africa's areas of least development is not a pressing challenge; In Tchad, development issues such as running water come before ICT, internet, or computers. Yet in the case of Moussoro, a Chadian city 300km from Chad's capital N'Djamena, humanitarian aid workers and government officials already have laptops - but not the technical knowledge on how to operate them. Chad Now and ENVODEV are working to change that.
